Justin Timberlake’s Mirimichi Golf Course flooded again
MILLINGTON, TN –
(WMC-TV) – Floodwaters have drowned out Justin Timberlake’s award-winning Mirimichi Golf Course.
«It has a little bit more water on it than we’d like,» said General Manager Rich Peterson.
Peterson said it is the second time the Millington course has flooded. Peterson wondered how high the water will rise with this 100 year flood.
«Nobody knows since it hasn’t happened since 1937,» said Peterson. «It lends an aura of uncomfortableness to the situation.»
Peterson said the course is not his main worry even though most of it is underwater.
«The course itself can take as much water as anyone can throw at it because eventually it’ll go away,» said Peterson.
However, water damage to the Callaway Performance and Learning Center causes greater concern for Peterson. He said as many as 40 people worked day and night to protect the building.
«Our employees care so much about this place,» said Peterson. «They worked 24 hours a day. Their families would bring them clothes. We kiss the kids and then everyone goes right back to work again.»
The end result was a man-made dam full of water. The Aquadam has 480,000 gallons of water inside. It gets as high as 7 feet behind the building and is 25 feet wide. Peterson said this is the first time one has ever been used to protect a building.
The aquadam was only partially finished last week, but it was enough hold back the flash flooding.
«It worked like a charm so with this second series of cresting that’s going to happen, we’re not worried about it,» said Peterson.
He said that Justin Timberlake has seen pictures of the flooding and is still optimistic. The manager said he hopes to have the course back open in six weeks or less.
Flood update: Aqua wall absorbs water at Mirimichi golf course
Big Creek and other Loosahatchie River tributaries created havoc for some residences and businesses, even as the sun broke out midday today.
«Sun!» Everybody look! Sun!» Kristen Ammons yelled at 11:30 to her customers inside Shelby Forest General Store near Meeman-Shelby Forest State Park.
Yet just five few miles away, the golf pros, management and crew at Mirimichi golf course labored with sandbags and something called an aqua wall they placed around Mirimichi’s swanky new Callway Golf Performance Center and pro shop.
There was nothing they could do to keep most of Justin Timberlake’s acclaimed golf complex of 27 holes from being covered by floodwater. But employees have fought four days to keep Big Creek’s approaching water out of the golf building.
Resembling a giant tire tube encircling the structure, the aqua wall can grow as high as 10 feet by filling with water.
«And we’ve got plenty of water,» general manager Rich Peterson said with a laugh.
Despite his good spirits, the struggle seemed to take a physical toll. Peterson bent over as if his back ached, and his eyes were glazed from short sleep. He didn’t complain. He and employees have worked continuously, even sleeping inside the building at night.
«We don’t stop,» he said.
Lead golf instructor Jennifer Jordan rolled up her jeans mid-morning as she prepared to work with more sandbags. Golf director Greg King labored with the crew to adjust the aqua wall so that its height could climb from Monday night’s four feet to six or eight feet by Wednesday.
Mirimichi was under renovation last year when it had to be closed an extra six weeks due to flooding. Once this year’s floodwaters recede, the crew should have the course ready for play in under six weeks, Peterson said. «The family is committed to having a fine public golf course,» Peterson said of Timberlake and his parents.
Something else has flooded Mirimichi; calls from friends, neighbors and community members with offers to help, said Peterson’s wife and marketing director, Deb Peterson.
