Rolling Stone: The 100 Best Songs of 2007

24 «What Goes Around… Comes Around»

Timberlake’s karmic payback tale is powered by a killer Bollywood-meets-Hollywood beat. «I was ready to give you my name. . . . Now it’s all just a shame» — anger never sounded so sexy

How can the Prince of Pop be on an R&B list? Did you listen to the album? Justin’s FutureSex/LoveSounds (released in September 2006) stormed into ’07 on the strength of Timbaland’s mud-sopped funk, brutal bass and clean synths and Timberlake’s suburban-rebel charm. «My Love», «LoveStoned» and «Summer Love» rocked every iPod, stereo player and stadium on his tour. Meanwhile, JT and the SoundScan Killer himself, 50 Cent, hooked up for «Ayo Technology».

Billboard’s 2007 «Year in Music and Touring»

Third for the year was Justin Timberlake’s FutureSex/LoveShow tour, which took in $126.8 million and drew more than 1.6 million people worldwide. The top 10 is rounded out by Kenny Chesney ($71.2 million), Rod Stewart ($70 million), Cirque Du Soleil’s Delirium ($59.4 million), Roger Waters ($53.2 million), Tim McGraw/Faith Hill ($52.3 million), Christina Aguilera ($48.1 million), and Rascal Flatts ($41.6 million).

«The Rolling Stones, Madonna, U2, Bon Jovi and Barbra Streisand were all touring arenas and stadiums worldwide in 2006, pumping up dollars and attendance», says Ray Waddell, executive director of touring/live music for Billboard. «Still, double digit decreases should be troubling for a segment of the music industry that is generally considered reliable. The massive success of tours by the Police, Genesis and others, along with a new touring superstar Justin Timberlake, shows people still love live music.

Los Angeles Times

3. Justin Timberlake ($96.8 million). The «SexyBack» man raked in $70.6 million on tour in North America during the year, to which he added $20.8 million from album sales. Worldwide, Billboard put his concert take at $126.8 million. Timberlake is the first artist to benefit in the Ultimate Top 10 ranking from digital sales, which added $5.4 million to his total. That pushed him up three slots from where he would have finished if only tour and album revenues were counted. All in all, 2007 cemented the former ‘N Sync singer’s grown-up power as a full-fledged grown-up pop star. Average ticket: $77.57.
