Justin Timberlake not so Bad
BEVERLY HILLS, California – Bad Teacher is the movie in which Justin Timberlake gets to sing badly – really badly.
It’s also the movie in which he has a truly bizarre sexual encounter with co-star Cameron Diaz, who, in real life, happens to be a former girlfriend.
Some actors would run for the exit if they were asked to do what Timberlake does in the comedy opening Friday, but he sounds pretty laid back about the whole experience of being perhaps the most eccentric component of a large ensemble cast which, along with Diaz, also includes Jason Segel, Phyllis Smith and Lucy Punch.
«After the first week of rehearsal and the first orgy, it all came together,» he quips.
He’s refreshingly shameless about portraying a weirdo – a schoolteacher who doesn’t really need to teach. He has weird erotic tastes and is disgustingly rich – which is why Diaz’s character sets her sights on him. She’s the prototypical, awful teacher on the prowl for a wealthy husband, and she figures he fits the bill, even if she needs to enhance her breasts in order to snare him.
Working on this movie made Timberlake recall his own school days – especially one memorable piece of advice.
«I had a teacher in seventh grade who said I should have more realistic goals than being a songwriter, because my schoolwork would suffer,» he grins.
Maybe his schoolwork did suffer, but so what? Those multiple Grammy Awards, platinum-selling solo albums – Justified (2002), Future Sex/Love Sounds (2006) – not to mention his hugely successful 2007 tour and burgeoning film career, suggest he’s doing more than OK. In fact, he’s doing so well, he can getting away with parodying his own image in Bad Teacher.
His character, a member of the teacher’s band, composes and sings a romantic ballad called Simpatico, which may well be the worst song ever enshrined on film. Timberlake sings it in this nasal falsetto, while making a fumbling attempt to accompany himself on the guitar.
«It really made me laugh to watch Justin Timberlake try to sing badly,» said director Jake Kasdan during shooting.
«I remember Jake coming to me and saying that we have to create something that’s going to be terrible,» Timberlake says now. The lyrics to Simpatico were largely the work of screenwriters Gene Stupnitsky and Lee Eisenberg. «I just tried to create the most terrible melody I could to it. The mission was to make it so bad that they would not be able to market it in the trailer!
«It’s obvious that I put my body on the line for comedy and my voice on the line for comedy.»
And, speaking of putting his body on the line, Timberlake is referring to a notorious bedroom scene between himself and Diaz, in which they indulge in what might impolitely be described as dry humping.
The two were in a real-life relationship a few years back, which perhaps explains why they’re so casual and relaxed today in discussing the scene, which was probably responsible for the film’s R rating in the U.S.
«I think we created the only dry-humping scene in cinema history,» Timberlake declares. He figures that having sex with your clothes on sends out a positive message to kids.
«I gotta say, there’s nothing wrong with a good jean jam, but also, the both of us felt collectively that we had a responsibility. . . . It’s really a public service announcement for safe sex.»
«Nobody ever got pregnant with their jeans on!» Diaz adds. «That’s pretty much the only message in the film we’re proud of. Other than that, there’s nothing else.»
Still, when Timberlake isn’t playing the clown with reporters, he can be serious. Bad Teacher may be a terrible advertisement for the state of education in the U.S., but Timberlake himself is a strong supporter of the teaching profession.
«We’ve got to figure out how to pay the teachers more. That’s my opinion of it. They’re like surrogate parents. . . . So yeah, they have such a huge responsibility, and they’re under-appreciated and underpaid. That’s my opinion of teachers.»
He also wants to make a pitch for Saturday Night Live, which he has now hosted four times. He feels it has helped validate his parallel career as an actor and comedian.
«I grew up with SNL as an institution,» he says. As the child of divorced parents, he only spent limited time with his father – but watching Saturday Night Live together was one of their bonds. «I remember staying up late. . . . I was really too young to watch some of the jokes that were on SNL, buy hey, I turned out OK. I’m just such a huge fan of the show and, to be honest, I’m here at this press conference because of SNL. I have no doubt about that.»
It was SNL creator Lorne Michaels who invited Timberlake to be on the show, and that gave him the opportunity to test his other talents.
«I owe getting the chance to be in Bad Teacher with these genius comedians and comediennes directly to SNL and to Lorne Michaels for letting me be there. I directly owe any opportunity I get to be in a comedy to SNL. I’m so grateful to that show, as a kid and as an adult.»
Justin Timberlake Talks Sex With Cameron Diaz
Last night, the Bad Teacher cast came together for the premiere of the flick in NYC and spilled behind-the-scenes secrets. One thing they had in common was kissing Cameron Diaz.
The blonde must have caused quite a scene on set because she had her male costars gushing all night.
Besides Justin Timberlake dubbing his dry-humping scene with the actress «the most awkward moment of my life,» he couldn’t stop talking about his ex-girlfriend’s hotness…
In fact, if the bombshell were his teacher in real life, he told E! News’ Michael Yo things «probably would’ve ended up a Dateline special.»
Costar Jason Segel was also hot for teacher.
«If I ever had a teacher as hot as Cameron Diaz, I’d still be in school,» he said. «I guarantee you that. I would intentionally be flunking every grade.»
Lucky for him, he got to smooch the star onscreen. And what was it like to lock lips with the leggy star, who’s still kissing A-Rod off camera?
«It was good for her,» he joked. «I’m very funny, so I imagine it was just a pleasure for her.»
Oh right, she’s the lucky one.
Justin Timberlake on his ‘Creepy’ New Role in ‘Bad Teacher’
Justin Timberlake finds himself within a love triangle of sorts in the soon-to-be released comedy ‘Bad Teacher,’ but as Justin tells us, he found the ladies’ attention to him as the rich, handsome substitute teacher Scott Delacorte, admittedly «creepy.»
«I kind of become the centerpiece between Lucy [Punch]’s character and Cameron [Diaz]’s character,» he explains. «I kind of like the tennis match, I just watch and spectate and get creepier by the minute.»
Despite Timberlake’s «creepy» perception of the role, he nevertheless manages to capture the attention of Cameron, which she tells us doesn’t really take much effort. ‘Bad Teacher’ Elizabeth, she says, is «just looking for a man to take care of her.»
Co-star Lucy Punch is up for the fight to win Justin’s heart in the film, however, confesses she would «never ever get in a war with Cameron for a man,» calling it «foolish» to compete for a boyfriend with the blonde bombshell.
Watch the video to hear more from the film’s stars as they walked the carpet Monday night at the New York City premiere.
‘Bad Teacher’ opens this Friday, June 24.
Timberlake & Diaz Dish On ‘Bad Teacher’
NEW YORK, N.Y. — Former couple and current co-stars Justin Timberlake and Cameron Diaz went the extra mile while filming their new movie, «Bad Teacher,» including one major cringe-worthy sex scene.
«I put my body on the line for this movie,» Justin joked with Access Hollywood at the movie’s premiere in New York City on Monday night. «It’s a stunt, I mean, let’s just call it what it is… Keanu Reeves jumps from a bus in ‘Speed,’ I dry humped!»
Despite their intimate onscreen time together, Justin said making the comedy with Cameron was all about the laughs.
«We think the world of each other,» he said of his co-star and ex-girlfriend. «[I] thought it could be a lot of fun and so, we just jumped in and did it.»
Cameron told Access that Justin’s «dry hump» scene is far from sexy.
«It’s the least sexiest sex scene ever put on film,» she explained. «It was perfect, it was the perfect thing for both of us to have fun with.»
The 38-year-old actress said she wasn’t worried about working with Justin knowing that the humor of the movie would come first.
«We always loved laughing together,» she said. «We’ve decided that we pretty much both will do anything for comedy and for a laugh, so we created some fun stuff for this film.»
