iTunes Users Praise Justin Timberlake And Matt Morris’ «Hallelujah» All The Way To #1

    http://idolator.com/5378942/itunes-user … e-way-to-1

As of yesterday, Justin Timberlake and Matt Morris’ take on «Hallelujah» from the Hope For Haiti Now telethon was the most downloaded track on iTunes from the charity event. Now it’s simply the most downloaded song on iTunes, period.

The Hope For Haiti Now compilation will reportedly debut at #1 on the Billboard Top 200 Albums chart this week, but it was the two pals’ somber cover of Leonard Cohen’s «Hallelujah» that struck a particular chord with viewers. However, according to Morris, there was almost another song the pair went with for the telecast instead.

Timberlake and Morris, who’ve known each other since doing time on The Mickey Mouse Club together in the early ’90s, also toyed around with the idea of covering the Beatles’ «Help.»

«It didn’t compare to what naturally came out of rehearsing ‘Hallelujah’,» Matt Morris tells Spinner. «There was a gravity to the event that influenced the performance of the song. When you approach a cover, especially one that has been covered as frequently as it has, we tried to make something beautiful. Anyone can make something new: change the time signature or add an instrument into the mix, but the melody of this song doesn’t need much. It hardly needs anything.»

Ultimately, the version of «Hallelujah» they went with was the one popularized by Jeff Buckley on his 1994 Grace album

Friday’s two-hour Hope For Haiti Now telethon raised roughly $58 million by the following day, which MTV noted is a new record for donations made by the general public through a disaster-relief telethon. That figure, however, only included donations made by telephone, texting and online. Large private donations and money given by corporations have yet to be calculated.

Also yet to be tallied up are the sales figures for the accompanying Hope For Haiti Now digital album of the telethon’s live musical performances. So far the collection has topped the iTunes chart in 18 countries.

Justin Timberlake, who New York magazine’s Vulture Blog labeled «the biggest surprise, and arguably the best performance of the night» indeed does appear to be the clear cut favorite from the event (at least in the U.S.), as his and Matt Morris’ cover of «Hallelujah» has been lodged at #2 on the iTunes singles chart (just behind Taylor Swift’s Valentine’s Day soundtrack tune «Today Was A Fairytale»).

Coming in after JT from the telecast is Sheryl Crow, Kid Rock and Keith Urban’s rendition of «Lean On Me,» at #12, while Swift is at #22 with «Breathless.»

iTunes Sales Drive $3 Million To Haiti Relief

    http://www.billboard.com/news/itunes-sa … 3399.story

Re: 'Halellujah' la más descargada en iTunes

Apple Inc. confirmed today that worldwide iTunes sales of the «Hope For Haiti Now» album, video, and individual performances have raised more than $3 million for the relief efforts, accounting for nearly all digital sales for the project.

As Billboard reported yesterday, the «Hope For Haiti Now» charity album debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart with 171,000 sold according to Nielsen SoundScan, becoming the first digital-exclusive set to top the tally in its nearly 54-year history. That album, featuring performances culled from last Friday’s (Jan. 22) massive «Hope For Haiti Now» telethon, only reached digital distributors over the weekend, making its sales number all the more impressive. SoundScan’s sales tracking week ends at the close of business each Sunday, so «Hope for Haiti’s» brisk sales came from no more than two full days.

«Hope For Haiti Now» is setting iTunes chart records too: it’s the first project to simultaneously occupy the No. 1 spot on iTunes’ US album, song and TV charts.

On the Billboard songs charts, tracks from the superstar Hope for Haiti Now broadcast sell a cumulative 334,000 in less than two days of availability, according to Nielsen SoundScan, a sum likely to increase next week after a full seven days of sales.

Of the 19 available songs, «Stranded» by Jay-Z, Bono, The Edge & Rihanna (131,000) moves the most downloads, good enough for a No. 8 debut on Digital Songs and a No. 16 start on the Hot 100.

The only other track from the Haiti benefit to debut on the charts is «Hallelujah» by Justin Timberlake & Matt Morris featuring Charlie Sexton which sold 64,000 downloads and entered Hot Digital Songs at No. 24 and the Hot 100 at No. 48.
