Off the Cuff: Trace Ayala and Justin Timberlake of William Rast

    http://www.gq.com/style/blogs/the-gq-ey … -rast.html

This week we’re bringing you from-the-gut interviews with some of menswear’s biggest names at New York Fashion Week. No canned responses; no cribbing from press releases. Just us shooting the shit with some of our favorite shot-callers in fashion. Today we have William Rast founders—and friends since childhood—Trace Ayala and Justin Timberlake.

Justin, you recently went on a road trip?
JT: Yeah, right after Christmas I went from Los Angeles to Montana and was just in awe of everything in between: deserts, pine forests, snow-capped mountain peaks. That idea of discovery actually really inspired us—we just tried to imagine, «What if the William Rast guy took a trip across America?»
TA:: Justin himself actually took a bunch of photographs—I know he doesn’t like to say this himself—that were really inspiring.

Are you a photographer? What camera do you use?
JT: My cousin is actually a really amazing photographer so we’ll trade tips on photography, and I worked with Jeff Bridges about two years ago, and he really got me into the Widelux.

What can you tell me about working with [William Rast and J. Lindeberg designer] Johan Lindeberg?
TA: [laughs] It’s fun, that’s for sure. He’s an amazingly creative guy. He knows what he wants and exactly how to do it—there’s nothing indecisive.

I think you imagine Swedish designers to be very buttoned up and severe, but that guy just seems like he doesn’t give a shit.
JT: We definitely identify with him in that way. It’s nice to know that you have someone who doesn’t give a shit about the wrong things. It’s not that he doesn’t care—he just doesn’t sweat the B.S.

Tell me about designing womenswear. Is it hard to get a handle on?
TA: I think it’s easier. I know what I like on a woman. You don’t have to worry about, «Is this something I would wear?»
JT: Well, what’s on trend for women’s so specific every season. You can take from the past and build on it, or you can be ironic, or romantic, or what have you. But with men, it’s never anything really brand-new, but things that have stood the test of time. You want to be as creative as possible, but when you see one of your great ideas realized, it’s like, «Oh that’s not really as great as I thought it was.» With men, you can’t stray as far from certain conventions.

Okay, last question: What do you miss most about Memphis?
    [simultaneously]
    TA: Barbecue.
    JT: Food.

Timberlake’s brand brings the road to the runway

    http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/us_fea_fashi … lliam_rast

Re: Artículos/entrevistas William Rast (semana de la moda 2010)

NEW YORK – William Rast, the contemporary fashion label by Justin Timberlake and longtime friend Trace Ayala, marched a parade of biker styles down the runway at New York Fashion Week Wednesday night in a collection dubbed «New America.»

It was a combination of denim, leather and military styles largely inspired by the sights, sounds and people you’d see on the open roads between the Mississippi River and the West Coast, Timberlake said.

«We had this idea of discoverers … and what does the modern-day discoverer look like?» he said in an interview earlier this week. «Biker culture brought the word `nomadic’ to mind, which brought the word `bohemian’ to mind.»

Timberlake actually took a road trip of his own last week, from Los Angeles to Wyoming, and it confirmed the direction of the collection that he wanted to mix the desert landscape «with the pine forests and snowcapped mountains.»

Somehow, though, Timberlake and Ayala got the message from the other designers in New York that layers, fringe and those contrasting sleeves — interpreted here as a sweatshirt with leather fringe sleeves and, for men, a denim jacket with black leather sleeves — would be key looks.

Other takeaways from the show: a zip-up leather jumpsuit, officer coats and the snakeskin treatment on jeans.

When it was time to take the bow, Timberlake did an exaggerated wipe of the brow for the cameras — and in front of Jessica Biel.

Two Business Questions for… Justin Timberlake?

    http://www.wired.com/epicenter/2010/02/ … imberlake/

William Rast, the fashion line of Justin Timberlake and his childhood friend Trace Ayala, reprised its Fashion Week runway show Wednesday night to a packed gallery of every type of fashion and technology press, the latter contingent having been drafted into service by Sony’s public relations corp, which was on hand to show off the company’s netbooks, Bloggie cameras, and other gadgets.

We tracked down Timberlake and Ayala backstage for a couple of rapid-fire questions about the fashion and technology businesses and «organic» cross-promotion.

Wired.com: Where do you see the intersection of technology and fashion these days? Do you think they’re related, and how are they related if so?

Trace Ayala: They’re related — just to be able to stream this show is amazing for us.

Justin Timberlake: Absolutely. Technology’s related to everything. Technology is making the world more accessible, so yeah, as generations go by, they’ll become more and more married to each other, for sure. I think they go hand in hand — fashion inspires design, and technology inspires design as well. What you can accomplish with a mobile device or whatever it is that’s being made, I think there’s a specific way to make that thing marketable and fashionable.

Wired.com: You’re in so many different industries — there’s the barbecue, the fashion, and obviously, the music. Do you think that’s the future of brands, to go across a bunch of different industries?

Justin Timberlake: We get creative with a lot of different brands but they’re so specific to each other. I don’t cross-promote anything of mine unless it genuinely feels organic. For instance, I have one of my bands playing the music for the fashion show, but that makes sense. I wouldn’t do something that was pushing something that wasn’t organic.

Ayala: Yeah, a lot of people cross the line with that.

And with that, we were hustled away by various handlers. A shred of wisdom, perhaps, gleaned from this brief conversation: Just because a company can cross-promote one product with another doesn’t mean it should, so sayeth Justin Randall Timberlake.

Justin Timberlake Wants To ‘Branch Out’ With William Rast Fashions

    http://www.mtv.com/news/articles/163220 … stin.jhtml

Re: Artículos/entrevistas William Rast (semana de la moda 2010)

‘We want to go as far as we can with this brand,’ he says.

Justin Timberlake isn’t afraid to take any of the facets of his career to the next level. Whether he’s bringing sexy back with his music, winning Emmys for his work on «Saturday Night Live» or conceiving new ways for his clothing line, William Rast, to take over the fashion world, Timberlake knows that the bigger you dream, the more you can achieve.

«Well, I think we know who we are — the DNA of our brand,» he said about the label. «The core of our brand … we want to represent America in its newer shape and form, which is jeans, great leather jackets — and I think from there what we’re trying to do with this collection is just branch out a little.»

For Timberlake and his partner in William Rast, Trace Ayala, it seems the sky’s the limit for the label. «Just give a little flavor here and there to go a little deeper and build a collection where we hope to go — we want to have our own furniture,» he explained. «We want to design interiors on cars. We want to go as far as we can with this brand.»

Even with such lofty goals, Timberlake insisted that it’s really all about the consumer — he just wants to please William Rast clients. «And thinking about the consumer in this financial weather … that’s been weighing heavily on our minds,» he said. «A lot of what you see on the runway will be very wearable, so that’s what I think we’re really excited about.»

Justin Timberlake Shows Off ‘Wearable’ William Rast Designs At Fashion Week

    http://www.mtv.com/news/articles/163217 … stin.jhtml

Re: Artículos/entrevistas William Rast (semana de la moda 2010)

‘This is like the Super Bowl of fashion, so we’re happy to be on the field,’ singer/designer says.

NEW YORK — Justin Timberlake has proven over the years that if he wants to do something he’ll do it, and usually with great success, whether it’s being a pop star, a producer, a comic actor, a golf-course owner or a fashion designer.

Timberlake and partner Trace Ayala have designed a new season’s worth of leather goods, jeans and vests for their William Rast clothing line. The duo showed off their latest collection at Cedar Lake on Wednesday, during one of the last nights of New York Fashion Week.

The show, Timberlake’s lady love Jessica Biel and other friends and family, included the brand’s signature denim looks while proving that as they mature as designers, both Timberlake and Ayala want their look to mature as well. «It’s the pinnacle [to show at fashion week],» Timberlake told MTV News before his clothes hit the runway. «It’s what you strive to be able to do. This is like the Super Bowl of fashion, so we’re happy to be on the field.»

While Ayala noted that he loves the waxed denim in the collection, Timberlake found it a bit harder to peg down his favorite piece in the line. «I don’t know. There’s so many pieces I love. I’m excited about the footwear,» he said. «Some of our leathers are great. Some of the tweed is great. Some of the sweaters are great.»

Timberlake is most proud of the fact that unlike more couture-based shows, everything you see come down the catwalk is something that someone can wear. «I think the thing were most happy about is that so many runways shows you go to and you go, ‘That was an amazing piece, what an art piece,’ » he explained. «But then it’s like, you’ll never see that ever again. What we we’re able to do was, although, we had a huge idea — which was the Midwest and nomadic discoverer meets biker culture — I think we were able to really focus on being consumer based.»

At the end of the day, Timberlake knows that people want to look stylish without spending their life savings. «And thinking about the consumer in this financial weather … that’s been weighing heavily on our minds,» he said. «A lot of what you see on the runway will be very wearable, so that’s what I think we’re really excited about.»

Justin Timberlake’s Fashion Line ‘Inspired By Mick Jagger’

Justin Timberlake has revealed who is an inspiration to his clothing line William Rast.

The ‘SexyBack’ star debuted his latest range from his co-owned fashion house on Tuesday (Feb 16) at New York Fashion Week, and he admitted that rocker Mick Jagger was an influence to the designs.

According to Justin there was a «blatant correlation» between music and fashion, as he told MTV: «Well, I think since the beginning of rock and roll, people have wanted to dress like rock stars.

«I still find old Mick Jagger jackets that I wish I could pull out of his closet or something. Of course, they wouldn’t fit me. Very tight.» He joked.

Timberlake Impresses But Hilfiger Tops The Bryant Park Show

    http://www.ny1.com/6-bronx-news-content … park-show/

Re: Artículos/entrevistas William Rast (semana de la moda 2010)

Justin Timberlake and his best friend Trace Ayala had a successful show of their line in Bryant Park, but it was the god of fashion, Tommy Hilfiger, who closed out the last Midtown Fashion Week. NY1’s George Whipple filed the following report.

Superstar Justin Timberlake and his best friend Trace Ayala showed their William Rast fashion line again this season, and the duo got critical praise for «keeping it real.»

«We’re not trying to be something we’re not. We’re not a couture brand, we are denim, leather jackets, our brand is about a discoverer. You know, the modern day discoverer,» says Timberlake. «So I don’t think we try to stretch ourselves beyond what we are and I think the consistency of that has to stand for something.»

If Justin Timberlake’s William Rast line wasn’t enough star power, Tommy Hilfiger, a designer who’s a star in his own right, closed the last Fashion Week in Bryant Park.
