Ronnie Herel reviews:
Justin Timbalake’s Futuresex / Lovesounds
Well it’s been highly anticipated and I have to say it was worth the wait! Knowing he’s really had to come with a different flava following his debut Justified, the pressure was on.
JT’s hollered at Timbaland for this one, who delivered Cry Me A River, the biggest hit off of the first album. A tactical move I hear you cry! Well maybe, but the Tim & JT collaboration definitely works in its quest to deliver a slice of futuristic funk.
Yep the album opens with the title track which sounds like the studio gadgets from the 80s electronic pop era – which is obviously a sound that Timbaland’s toying with right now. (He’s used similar instruments on Nelly Furtado’s Promiscuous and Man-eater also.)
The Big standout tune is My Love featuring T.I. It has a Cry Me A River vibe (intentional me thinks!) so you know it just kicks. #1 record for sure!
The album does have its custom-built radio friendly moments like What Goes Around (which apparently is another direct dig at Britney) but it’s so polished and pleasant that it’s hard not to like it.
Will.I.Am (Black Eyed Peas) has also been brought into the frame for production chores on a couple of cuts including Damn Girl, donning an ol-skool Stax Soul sound.
Throughout the album there are also a series of preludes, interludes and part 2’s, like on Chop Me Up featuring Three 6 Mafia.
The chopped and screwed cut off the album bounces along kinda nice, then suddenly, midway through, switches into this b-line monster that Three 6 Mafia murda to the point you don’t want to it end. Absolutely heavy!
Watch out for Pose which re-unites JT and Snoop as well. It’s yet another funky chapter on JT’s sophomore project.
With all the hits, cool cuts and big production budgets in place, the album is definitely strong!
